Student Spotlight: Jacob K. – A Scholar and Hockey Star Excelling at Grand Canyon Private Academy
At Grand Canyon Private Academy (GCPA), students are empowered to pursue both academic excellence and their personal passions. Sixth-grader Jacob K. is a shining example of this balance. An exceptional student and dedicated hockey player, Jacob’s journey through virtual learning showcases how GCPA supports gifted students in achieving their goals.
A Gifted Academic Journey
Jacob’s academic achievements are nothing short of remarkable. Since kindergarten, he has been enrolled in gifted programs, consistently working ahead of his grade level. Currently, he is excelling in seventh-grade math and eighth-grade language arts while officially being in sixth grade. His hard work and dedication have earned him a place on GCPA’s Honor Roll, and last year, he received the U.S. President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence (Gold Seal), one of the most prestigious recognitions for students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement.
Beyond the classroom, Jacob’s intellectual curiosity extends to a variety of subjects. He is multilingual, speaking English, Spanish, and Russian fluently, and has even picked up phrases in Greek and, thanks to a close family friend Mrs. Dawn P., some phrases in Chinese. His love for learning also led him to compete in the school’s spelling bee, where he came remarkably close to winning, securing a top spot among his peers.
Balancing Academics and a Passion for Hockey
While Jacob is an extraordinary student, he is equally impressive on the ice. Having started skating at just four years old, his hockey career has taken him across the globe, from Cyprus and Russia to Florida, where he plays in the highly competitive AA travel league. His rigorous training schedule requires discipline and flexibility—qualities that GCPA’s self-paced learning model allows him to maintain.
“I focus on my schoolwork in the morning because by the afternoon, I have to be at hockey practice,” Jacob explains. “Some days, I don’t have hockey, so I use that time to get ahead on assignments.”
His father, Said K., emphasizes how GCPA’s structure has been a game-changer for their family. “With Jacob’s demanding schedule, attending a traditional school wouldn’t be feasible. Virtual learning allows him to thrive in both academics and hockey without compromising on either,” he shares.
Exploring New Talents and Interests
Jacob’s interests extend well beyond the rink. A natural problem-solver, he is delving into programming with C++ and enjoys 3D modeling, even using a 3D printer at home to bring his designs to life. He also plays piano under the guidance of a private instructor, further showcasing his well-rounded talents.
Jacob’s innovative thinking is also evident in his academic pursuits. He recently developed a mathematical theory on multidimensional geometry, which he shared with his teacher, Mrs. Lavigne. She encouraged him to explore his ideas further, exemplifying the supportive learning environment that GCPA fosters.
Why GCPA is the Right Fit
For students like Jacob, GCPA offers a perfect blend of flexibility and challenge. “I love that I don’t have to carry heavy backpacks, and I can study in a comfortable environment,” Jacob shares. “And I can still connect with classmates and teachers through virtual discussions.”
His father echoes this sentiment. “The teachers are incredibly supportive. Mrs. Zinzeris, Mrs. Hendrix, and Mrs. Lavigne have all gone above and beyond to help Jacob succeed,” Said notes. “They ensure he stays on track and encourage his curiosity.”
When asked what advice he would give to new students, Jacob emphasizes time management and engagement. “Always do your assignments at least two days before they’re due. And make sure to connect with other students—helping each other makes a big difference.”
Jacob K. exemplifies the best of GCPA—academic excellence, athletic dedication, and a passion for lifelong learning. His journey is just beginning, and with the strong foundation he’s building, the future looks incredibly bright.
